A significant amount of any family physician's lime is spent caring for patients with chronic illnesses. Six principles which can aide this caring process are continuity of care, understanding on the part of doctors and patients, participation of patients and their families in their own care, modification of lifestyle, facilitation of adherence to treatment, and a standard management framework. Personal reflections on these principles are shared.
